The West of Scotland Branch of the Institution has presented Certificate of Merit awards to 18 individuals and one team.

The awards are handed out annually to recognise the contribution of non-health and safety professionals to keeping workers out of harm's reach.

Individual winners include staff from construction and civil engineering firms, a college and an organisation responsible for preventing waste across Scotland.

The team award was presented to customer service and operations team at K:A Leisure, which provides a sport and leisure service to people living in west Scotland.

The nomination form said that the team "has taken a proactive approach" in assisting with the implementation of the company's safety culture action plan, which has had a positive impact on safety culture among all employees.

It added: "The team has taken forward a number of health and safety initiatives that have had a significant impact on each of their respective workplaces, and have continuously gone the extra mile to help the senior management team effectively implement health and safety processes and procedures on site."

The award ceremony was held at Hampden Park Stadium, Glasgow, on Thursday 27 April. It was the 25th year the IOSH branch has held the event.

The individual gongs were presented to: Andrew Adam and Gordon Gibney, from Scotland Transerv; Joe Ballantyne and Tom Baxter from Topek Ltd; Ken Brown from Balfour Beatty; Fiona Craig from Zero Waste Scotland; Gary Frew, Brian Rooney and Allan Litterick from CBES Ltd; David Lamont from Land Engineering Ltd; Jordan McCluskey and Andrew Newlands from George Leslie Ltd; Guy Melville And John Russell from Insite Contracts; John Shannon from Shannon Site Solutions; Fiona Sloan and Gordon Webb from The Glashow School of Art; and Sinclair Smith from McLuckie Engineering Ltd.

Fraser Allan, an executive member of the West of Scotland branch, helped to set up the awards.

He said: "In its 25th year, our Certificate of Merit Awards goes from strength to strength. We were delighted to receive all of the nominations, which demonstrated the real desire among the workforce in the west of Scotland to protect people.

"It is encouraging to see that employees at all levels are taking responsibility for health and safety, not just health and safety professionals.

"As health and safety professionals, we strive to protect the people we work with. But we require buy-in from people at every level to implement health and safety policies, something which is clearly happening in businesses across this part of Scotland.

"We congratulate every award recipient. Their awards are all thoroughly deserved."
