Property management firm pays £15k asbestos fine

Thistlemoor Healthcare and Management was undertaking extensive refurbishment works, one of which was a part of a medical centre in Peterborough, between April and May 2017, but did not carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the asbestos risk.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that the company did not survey either site for the hazardous material, though both properties were likely to contain asbestos.

At both locations, the work involved was likely to disturb asbestos-containing materials because it involved the strip out and part demolition of the properties.

Thistlemoor Healthcare and Management of Thistlemoor Road, Peterborough pleaded guilty to breaching reg 5 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 at Huntingdon Magistrates' Court on 2 August. The business must also pay £1,806 costs.

 Component maker fined for exposing unlicensed workers to asbestos

Birmingham Magistrates’ Court was told that the Birmingham Specialities employees had been asked by their manager to remove the wall, despite there being no asbestos survey or up-to-date asbestos management plan for the premises. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found there were no safeguards or proper precautions in place before the unlicensed workers removed the asbestos insulation sheets.

 Leap in Australian workers testing positive for methamphetamines

Around 850,000 people work in safety-sensitive industries in Australia. SafeWork Laboratories toxicologist Andrew Leibie said the latest figure indicated at least 18,500 workers could be operating under the influence of the hard drug, known as crystal meth or ice in its most potent form. He added that the figure could be much higher because many workplaces did not test for drug use.Workers who could be operating machinery or driving a vehicle would have impaired senses, the report warns, and would pose a risk to their own safety and the safety of co-workers.

 Directors blame Ikon’s collapse on bad publicity from HSE death investigation

Ikon ceased trading two months after 22-year-old Luke Allen died on 15 March after falling through the roof of the former sports café building in Bristol city centre. Allen was employed by a subcontractor on the project for which Ikon was the main contractor.

 Singapore’s WSH committee looks at OSH leadership as contractor prequal measure

The WSH2028 Tripartite Strategy Committee (TSC), which was announced by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower earlier this year, has been tasked with developing a 10-year plan to improve OSH standards.Speaking at the workplace safety and health (WSH) awards ceremony on 31 July, Manpower Minister Josephine Teo said that if senior managers in companies were committed to workplace safety and health, this would “naturally set the tone for the rest of the company to follow”.

 England’s first SHE apprenticeship launched

The SHE technician apprenticeship is a level three qualification (the equivalent of two A Levels). Completion of the two-year course will enable apprentices to start their career as a safety and health professional and join IOSH at TechIOSH level. It was spearheaded by a working group comprising Balfour Beatty, Costain, High Speed 2, Mitie, Morrison Utilities, Permission Homes, Sapa UK, Sisk, Skanska and Thames Water, to address the impact that technological innovations are having on business working practices.

 Government urged to swiftly remove Grenfell-style combustible cladding

In response to a consultation into banning the use of combustible materials in cladding systems, like that which contributed to the rapid spread of fire that killed 71 of the high-rise block’s residents last June, the EHRC said it was concerned about their continued use on existing buildings.
