The event, arranged by IOSH's Offshore Group, will bring together the oil and gas, renewables and marine sectors.
Simon Hatson, Chair of the IOSH group, said that with the three sectors expected to increasingly come together for combined operations in the future, it is vital that safety and health remains a priority to avoid employees getting injured or becoming unwell as a result of their work.
Delegates at the event will hear examples of best practice in the sectors and how they have benefitted businesses.
Mr Hatson said: "Offshore is a high-risk industry. It is vital, therefore, that when the different sectors combine they are able to ensure their safety and health management systems marry up to avoid any incidents which could put employees at risk.
"We are running this event to offer delegates an understanding of the challenges brought about by the different sectors working together, the solutions which can be considered and the potential cost saving opportunities available.
"Those who attend will develop an appreciation for the trials the sectors face, as well as an understanding of the methods adopted to overcome them and the opportunity to identify opportunities to learn from other activities ongoing outside of your own sector of the offshore industry."
The event, called Let's Talk: exploring the synergies and differences between the offshore oil and gas and offshore renewables sector, will be held at the Stadium of Light football stadium in Sunderland between 9.15am and 4.15pm on Wednesday 16 November.
There will be presentations from Peter Lowson, Offshore Energy Liaison Officer at the Marine Coastguard Agency; Les Linklater, Executive Director of Step Change in Safety; Chris Streatfeild, Director of Health and Safety at Renewable UK; and Chris Baldwin, Technical Advisor at the International Marine Contractors Association.
Delegates will also hear from the Health and Safety Executive, with a presentation from Trevor Johnson and Bruce Appleton, while Chris Flint and Bob Egan will lead a question and answer session.
Mr Hatson, who will give the opening address at the event with the IOSH group's Vice-Chair Mark Jenkins, added: "Businesses which ensure the safety and health of their employees is a top priority reap the rewards, including reductions in absenteeism and having a more motivated workforce.
"As well as hearing examples of best practice from our speakers, people who attend will also have the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals."

Occupational health management in the workplace is aimed at safety and health professionals. IOSH says it will provide them with the thinking and knowledge to assess whether their employers or clients are managing health risks sufficiently.It contains an overview of occupational health, discusses why managing health at work is harder than managing safety, and highlights health checks and controls which can help with monitoring the health and wellbeing of workers.

In her speech at the Conservative party conference, Mrs May said the UK Government will get tough with organisations which flout these issues.She also told delegates at the conference in Birmingham that there will be an emphasis on the need for improved public policy on skills and training.Richard Jones, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at IOSH, said: “These were all key areas highlighted in the IOSH manifesto. We are also encouraged that she refers to not only protecting, but enhancing worker’s rights, which we believe must include health and safety.”
The Institution is backing the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work’s (EU-OSHA) campaign ‘Healthy workplaces for all ages’. The initiative aims to promote sustainable work and healthy ageing throughout people’s working lives, provide employers and employees with relevant information, and facilitate the exchange of good practice in this area.
Staff from IOSH’s Membership Division helped around 50 members to record skills and achievements, and map out their career paths, throughout a series of free CPD drop-in sessions held at The Grange – IOSH’s headquarters in Leicestershire – on Friday 30 September.The sessions included updates on recent enhancements to IOSH’s online CPD system and demonstrations on how to add a development plan, write reflective statements and upload documents to members’ records.
The Roadmap is a voluntary action scheme which aims to share good practice between businesses across Europe to reduce workers exposure to cancer-causing substances.The scheme was launched at the ‘Preventing work-related cancer, conference on carcinogens’, hosted by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, in Amsterdam, earlier this year.
Oil exploration company Chevron was served a prohibition notice in 2013 for corroded stairs and platform leading to a helideck on one of its offshore platforms, which a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector believed rendered the stairway unsafe.Appealing successfully against the notice at an employment tribunal, Chevron relied on an expert inspection and test of the stairway it had commissioned after receiving the notice. The expert’s report showed the metalwork passed British Standard strength test and was fit for use.
Shane Gorman, Workforce Engagement Coordinator for member-led organisation Step Change in Safety, said when workers are engaged they feel empowered to raise awareness of unsafe situations, preventing themselves and their colleagues from coming to harm.Shane was speaking at a meeting arranged by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s (IOSH) Offshore Group.

But, he added, this does not mean the sectors cannot combine to protect employees, citing the example of new guidelines for offshore emergency response which were published earlier this year and combined several organisations.
