Health and Wellbeing Week set for October launch

From the archive:  Just so you know, this article is more than 3 years old.

GB Health and Wellbeing Week 2016

Major employers including Costain, Heathrow, the Metropolitan Police, Thames Water and Transport for London (TfL) have signed up to provide information to help other organisations promote workforce health and wellbeing. The founder members are encouraging employers to organise activities and events during the five days, focusing on improving occupational health and employee fitness.

The week will focus on four areas: worker -- the impacts of ill health in the workplace and supporting those with health conditions or who are returning to work after absence; workplace -- how to avoid ill health at work, from removing hazards to training staff; wellbeing -- promoting a healthy lifestyle; and wider community -- encouraging wellbeing in the wider community.

An online "resources" page is under construction and already offers free, downloadable material from some of the week's founding members. Information about musculoskeletal disorders includes a TfL document on low back pain and the importance of good posture, while a Skanska poster shows how the company categorises various job roles in order to keep its staff safe.

Health and wellbeing strategies from Thames Water, Skanska and TfL are also online, along with leaflets on cancer risks, mental clarity and healthy eating.

Other member organisations of GB Health and Wellbeing Week include British Occupational Hygiene Society, IOSH and the Health and Safety Laboratory.

Homeworking is antidote to unhealthy commute, says RSPH

Tuesday 13th September 2016
Over 24 million people commute to and from work each day in England and Wales, for an average of 56 minutes. The majority of these commuters travel using non-active methods of transport, such as cars, buses and trains. The Royal Society for Public Health’s (RSPH) report, Health in a Hurry, draws on research that indicates “passive commuting” can negatively impact health and wellbeing.

 Refiner ignored fatality-in-waiting warning

Thursday 15th September 2016
David Thomas was using the walkway to access an oil tanker on 5 March 2012 when it suddenly gave way. He fell 3.5 m over the side and his legs became tangled in loose cables. He sustained fractures to both legs and a dislocated knee. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) told Swansea Crown Court that Valero had not carried out a sufficient risk assessment for the use of the access tower, with the result that the dangers of slack cables were not identified.
