Food and drink industry challenges the focus of conference
The National Food and Drink Manufacturing Health and Safety Conference will focus on topics like the ageing workforce and sentencing guidelines, with case studies being used to bring the event to life.
Meanwhile former England rugby international and RAF pilot Rory Underwood, who is now a development director at risk management services company Alcumus, will talk about his experiences, focusing on behavioural-based safety.
IOSH's Food and Drink Industries Group have collaboratively organised the event with the Food and Drink Manufacture Health and Safety Forum. It will use the stage to promote its material on electrical safety. This will include a talk from Louise Taggart, whose brother Michael was killed in an electrical accident.
The two-day event is aimed at anyone who works in the food and drink industry who has responsibility for, or an interest in, health and safety.
John Boyle, Chair of the IOSH group, said: "Health and safety really is a vital cog for business success in our industry. Successful health and safety management systems mean fewer absences and more motivated staff, aiding productivity.
"However as the world of work changes, new challenges are being encountered. As highlighted in IOSH's new five-year strategy, WORK 2022, it is crucial that we adapt to ensure we keep pace with this.
"We are very excited about our conference this year. We have a packed programme full of key information for health and safety professionals and other industry leaders.
"As well as offering insights into some of the practices of leading organisations, both inside and outside of the sector, our high-profile speakers will share their occupational safety and health challenges, providing good practice techniques for delegates to take back to their workplaces."
Those speakers include Dr Matthew Penrose, the Health and Safety Executive's Head of Manufacturing and Facilities Unit, who will update on their strategy, and Kevin Rowan, Head of Organisations and Services for Trades Union Congress.
There will also be an interactive session on prosecution interviews run by representatives of law firm DAC Beachcroft and Pamela Brown, Head of Health and Safety at Allied Bakeries, will talk about changes in their culture. A further presentation will focus on the Construction Design and Management Regulations.
The event will be held at The Oxford Belfry, in Thame, Oxfordshire, on 10-11 October.
