Electrical industry workers offered free health assessments

The sector's Joint Industry Board (JIB) run by Unite and the ECA has brokered the free assessments for employees of its member companies covered by the JIB's benefits scheme. Operatives will be able to receive a funded OHA every three years.

Four occupational health providers will provide the assessments: Clarity Healthcare, Express Medicals, RPS Group and Sarsen Health. Companies will be able to choose the most convenient provider and location.

An occupational health physician from one of the providers will carry out a medical examination then advise the employer on the employee's health and make recommendations for adjustments to ensure a safe/healthy working environment. The examination can also be an assessment of the individual's fitness for work.

The assessments will cover ten fitness for work and health metrics, including respiratory function, hearing, skin health, blood pressure and mental health/workplace stress. The JIB says the OHAs are designed to help employers identify the steps needed to ensure the health and wellbeing of employees and can provide the individual with early signs of any health issues, which can be effectively managed and prevented.

Paul Reeve, director of business at the ECA, said: "Though the individual data will be confidential, we will increasingly be able to collect, and report on, a range of industry-wide occupational health metrics."

The figures, which are drawn from the quarterly Labour Force Survey and other sources and produced by the Office of National Statistics, show that the number of workers who said they experienced stress, depression or anxiety was up 7% on the previous period, from 488,000 (a rate of 1,510 per 100,000 workers) to 526,000. In 2014-15, 440,000 workers reported a mental health problem caused or made worse by employment.

 Irish regulator launches online stress tool

Thursday 2nd November 2017
Developed with the State Claims Agency, the “Work Positive” tool can be used to carry out confidential psychosocial risk assessments. It has been designed to help employers assess workplace stressors, employee psychological wellbeing and critical incident exposure in the workplace. Intended to cover whole workforces, the HSA said the stress assessment can be carried out over three to six months and be re-used every few years.

The report has made 40 recommendations for businesses, regulators, the government and the public sector after it found one worker in six suffers from a mental illness and 300,000 people with long-term mental health problems lose their jobs every year.

 UK safety fines rose 80% in first year of new sentencing guidelines

Tuesday 7th November 2017
In 2016-17 – the first full year that the new sentencing guidelines for safety and health offences were in place – fines reached £69.9m compared with £38.8m for the same period a year earlier. This is the second consecutive year in which financial penalties have soared. There was a 115.5% rise between 2014-15 (when £18m worth of fines were collected) and 2015-16.

 ISO now plans February launch for ISO 45001

The publication, which is earlier than many predicted, will only happen if the ballot due on 25 January is successful, says the ISO communiqué. The working group that is part of ISO/PC 283 – the project committee developing the standard – met in Malacca City in Malaysia from 18-23 September to discuss the 1,600 comments submitted earlier this year to the public consultation on the second draft standard, DIS2.DIS2 was subject to a ballot of 69 national standards bodies in May and June and produced a result of 88% in favour of approving the latest draft.
