Construction firm sentenced over multiple safety failings on site
Monday 12th August 2019
Preston Magistrates' Court was told how Navkaar had put its workers at serious risk of personal injury or death at a construction site in Blackpool, Lancashire between 12 December 2015 and 14 June 2018.
The northwest London-based company had failed to prevent risks from falls from height, exposure to asbestos and dangerous electrical systems. The court was told Navkaar failed to provide suitable welfare facilities and there were no measures to prevent fire on site.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that workers had carried out work in an unsafe manner without the appropriate measures in place to ensure their health, safety and welfare. Both employees and contractors did not have the appropriate skills, knowledge and experience to complete the work. Navkaar failed to comply with its duty as principal contactor to plan, manage and monitor the work.
Navkaar, of Station Approach, Northwood, London pleaded guilty to breaching reg 13(1) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. In addition to its fine, the company must also pay £3,860 costs.
