LGV drivers need mental health support, says RTITB

Lorry drivers are vulnerable to mental health problems because of their long hours, poor physical health and prolonged periods of working alone, RTITB has warned.


Now the road transport training body has called on the logistics industry to help improve mental ill-health among drivers of large goods vehicles (LGVs). 

LGV drivers, whose standard working day usually includes long hours of intense concentration, strict time constraints, demanding delivery targets and heavy traffic conditions, may be more susceptible to mental health problems RTITB said. 

It added that drivers’ poor physical health, caused by an unhealthy diet, not enough exercise and sleep loss, could exacerbate existing mental health conditions. 

The body also listed other factors that could increase the risk of mental ill-health, such as long periods of lone working, time spent away from their families and post-traumatic stress disorder after a road accident.

RTITB’s managing director, Laura Nelson, said: “One of the most effective ways to address mental health problems among LGV drivers, and a big step towards recovery, is to talk about them.”

She added: “Employers can easily incorporate mental health training into the Driver CPC [Certificate of Professional Competence] period training that their LGV drivers are already required to complete.”
