ISO 45001 - the new global standard for health and safety management systems is now available and its significance should not be underestimated. More than 65 countries provided an input into this process over the last four years, and the standard may eventually replace up to 24 national health and safety standards including the widely recognised BS OHSAS 18001.

Why is a new standard needed?
ISO 45001 is a natural progression from the current OHSAS 18001 model and is reflective of contemporary health and safety management issues and trends. As more and more organisations shift towards integrated safety, environmental and quality (SHEQ) management systems, then clearly a consistent and universally recognised model is required. The new standard ensures a globalised approach towards improving health and safety standards whilst enabling local regulatory requirements to be satisfied.

ISO 45001 is based on the 10 main clauses of the ISO management systems standard Annex SL.

The central themes of the standard are leadership and worker participation. The success of any health and safety management is dependent on leadership, commitment and participation from all levels and functions of the business. Organisations will be required to tangibly demonstrate leadership in health and safety matters across all levels of the business.
