Performance Psychology in Safety
In performance psychology we call that 'little voice' in our head 'Self Talk' and elite performers in the world of sport, music, dance and the military understand that it’s an important component of their performance, decision making and ultimately outcomes too.
It’s the same in our daily lives – many of us will have heard that little voice when thinking of applying for a new job or perhaps considering retraining for a new career or even a relationship.
What has your voice said in such moments….?
'They’ll be people better qualified than me.'
'I won’t have the time to study' or 'We live too far apart'.
Our Self Talk in these key moments either motivate us to give things a try or discourage us and talk us out of a potential new opportunity.
Of course, our Self Talk has a huge influence in safety too. What kind of things do you think the people in your organisations say to themselves in those key safety critical moments?
'Just this once and it’ll be ok.'
'Maybe I should report this but who will listen' and 'Maybe they’ll think I’m complaining'.
' know safety is important BUT, we really need to get this done before 4pm.'
The great news is that once we understand where our Self Talk originates from and we get better at noticing what it says, we can then start to take immediate and deliberate action to reframe what it says in these crucial moments. Yes, just like an elite athlete or performer would.
