Did you know that worldwide, there are around 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million victims of work-related illness every year? Accidents at work and work-related ill health not only cause major disruption to business but the effect on quality of life to the individual cannot be understated.
At the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), we passionately believe that good safety performance deserves to be recognised and rewarded, and for over 65 years, we’ve been doing just that.
The RoSPA Health and Safety Awards proudly recognises, honours and celebrates the people, organisations and projects that help shape the future of health and safety excellence. With almost 2,000 entries every year from nearly 50 countries and a reach of over 7million employees, it has become one of the most prestigious schemes in the world.
As the awards scheme has grown, so too has the kudos associated with winning our accolades, along with the number and quality of organisations entering. Obviously, there is an element of competitiveness to the scheme, but also a robustness to the independent and expert judging process, which means that every entry is assessed purely on merit. So much so, that winning a RoSPA Award has become internationally-renowned as the pinnacle in health and safety achievement.
The 2022 RoSPA Health and Safety and Awards launches this month and the process of becoming an award winning organisation couldn’t be simpler.
Firstly, you need to decide who is going to enter. Any organisation from around the world can enter, and many organisations enter for different areas of their business. Some decide to register the entire organisation or group, while others choose to enter different branches, allowing them to compete against one another to see who has the best implementation of the group’s health and safety management system. Alternatively, contracting organisations regularly decide to enter specific projects, to show they have been delivered to a high standard of health and safety. It’s vital to understand exactly who is entering the RoSPA Awards, and make sure the answers to the questions and supporting evidence are all relevant to that organisation, branch or project.
Secondly, you need to decide which of the four categories you will be entering. If you want to look at your health and safety individually and receive a certificate based on our marking scheme, then the Achievement Awards are for you. If you think your organisation has the best health and safety performance within your sector – then enter our competitive Industry Sector awards. Alternatively, if your organisation has a fleet of vehicles and you manage it well, the Fleet Safety Awards are for you. Finally, if you work in the leisure sector, show how well you look after your employees, visitors and activity participants by entering the Leisure Safety Awards.
Once you have purchased your entry, you can also select which of the free of charge specialist awards you would like to enter. The Specialist Awards recognise organisations, teams, projects and individuals that excel in specific areas of health and safety. These awards include the brand new Inspiring Women in Safety Award, which will be awarded to an individual woman who has made a significant impact in the world of health, safety and wellbeing.
Then it’s over to you to complete your entry! Remember, take your time… but not too much time. Don't underestimate the time needed to “sell yourself”. Good award entries take four to six weeks to complete, which may seem a while, however the benefits of winning a RoSPA Award can last a lifetime.
For new entrants or those looking for advice on their submission, we offer a free health and safety awards mentor. Our large network of experienced mentors from a wide range of countries and sectors can help with your submission, offering advice on how to strengthen your entry, develop your skills and knowledge and offer new ideas and powerful ways of presenting your submission.
